Diffusion

Our Take

In a semiconductor, charge carriers naturally (no applied voltage or electric field) move from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. This movement is called diffusion and it occurs to maintain thermal equilibrium. An example of this is when the PN junction is formed, free electrons in the n region, near the junction, cross the junction into the p region and combine with holes near the junction which results into the formation of the depletion region.
